Veterans Go Solar – New Jobs for the national forces

July 7, 2009

Welcome back, dedicated reader! Thanks for visiting.

If the mission is getting the White House to move faster on my brilliant ideas of economic growth through infrastructure development, we’ve just moved up one notch on the ladder of success.

Newsweek’s Daniel Stone wrote a piece in the beginning of the month commenting on the involvement of war veterans in the renewable energy industry as a post-war career.  I always thought it would be a fantastic way to put our returned military back; improve our national security by promoting renewable energy around the country.  Instead of post -Vietnam homelessness and depression, let’s employ our strong-backed vets in affecting positive change to the American energy infrastructure.  It has to happen.  Vets need something to do when they get home from war and jobs that influence society in a positive way would be a fantastic method of reintegration.   And on a larger scale, if they get assigned to do what must be done, everyone wins.   Don’t we all love win/win scenarios?  Deploy a Green Army nation wide to help impliment the renewable energy economy.  It’s a  mission worthy of hero status.

Plans for the deployment of a renewable energy economy in America are a gigantic strategic project with many fronts:

- Large scale solar & wind farms -residential solar rooftops and wind turbine combinations -corporate headquarters giant solar installations – the financial agreements necessary to make the monetary conversion between wanting solar to go up and paying everyone involved in getting the technology up and running (the money side is as complicated and involving as many people as the installation side)- government buildings moving to solar/wind energy mixes, installing new light bulb standards (thanks Obama) and even the double flush toilet (the model can be found at the Monterey aquarium to help middle California conserve water) in every government building – and that doesn’t even include the national school system (aka public schools) each of which could go solar and have light bulb and toilet exchange…  Even after all those positions are filled, what are we going to do with all of the removed material?  Reclaim, reuse, recycle- these processes entail the guided expenditure of energy which can be rewarded through remuneration (aka new jobs).  A little creativity and vision for projects needed to be done reveals many positions available for many returned war vets with training in the renewable energy industry…

All of the tasks need to be tackled with finesse:

- Shmoozing neighbourhood councils -  building boards – creating efficient paperwork pathways to success by successfully navigating government bureaus.  The list doesn’t end there but I think you get the idea by now.

Strapping young gentlemen who have just gone through a potentially less-than-positive missions overseas have traditionally returned home to battle the VA for basic services to help reintegration into the home turf (it’s an inefficient system, correct me if I’m wrong).  A stopgap method could be implemented to help reintegrate returned soldiers through renewable energy training and teaching the skills necessary to help them revitalize the country’s energy infrastructure.  Put them to work immediately.

Can you imagine a veteran network of green energy providers?  A bit of positive, national development sweat equity might even be a viable alternative to therapy.  America needs the labor input to bring the roads, bridges, rooftops spaces and electric grids in line with our needs in the 21st century.  Who better to task with this monumental task?  What an excellent mission.

Your mission to help the returning vets as well as our energy problem is admirable. Good luck, I hope you are heard.

Hello Daniel Stone! I am exactly on the same page with you! I live in Tucson Arizona, with Davis Monthan Air Force Base right here in town. There are presently no strong, viable solar electric companies here in town (unbelievable, I know) There is Global Solar that is at the University of Arizona now and has a big contract with the military (roll out flexible solar panels for communications), and created a solar community for upscale home owners. However, as the town has exploded these past ten years, that is only one small housing development compared to hundreds of others in and around the area (Marana, Sierra Vista, Green Valley, Casa Grande, Vail, etc. Our Electric Company, TEP, made a contract to provide solar energy which is less that acceptable for the UA and they are looking for proposals from other sources presently, along with DMAFB and Pima County. I recently drove past a field of high tech solar panels which were providing Mw of electricity in a rural ranching area in New Mexico – SunEdison. I did a little research on that company and it is top of the line international company. I recently emailed them to inquire about partnership or franchising through them. I know little about the nuts and bolts of solar panel assembly, installation or marketing, but I feel that if I am associated with people already in the business in areas that are underrepresented, it would be a win-win situation for so many people. Tucson also houses one of the best VA hospitals in the country. Unemployment is high here. My son is a navy vet, and cannot find a job to help support himself through school. I am an educator who has always been interested in high tech vocational education, renewable energy and community service. People don’t need a hand out that doesn’t quite meet their basic needs. They need work – jobs – so they can provide for themselves and contribute to society with the long range vision of protecting and healing our earth. If there is anything you can do to help me make this happen, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am an unemployed veteran (10 1/2 years, Desert Storm veteran) who has been seeking information on training for veterans for green jobs in the Chicagoland area. Any information that you can provide would be appreciated.

I am a Californian Viet-Nam Vet and their will be a Solar Plant opening up soon in the Mojave Desert and I was wondering if there would be some type of training for me so I can be ready and employable. I have no funds to pay for training. My E-Mail is not working right now so could please contact me at Area Code (760)-267-1560. Thank You.

My name is Don Taylor. I’m a Airforce Veteran of the first Gulf War. I was an electrician and was sent to numerous schools. Before I got out, I was able to obatined my master electricains license. I love the electrical field. I was diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome before the Airforced medically discharged me. I worked at Chrysler as an Engineer for 7 years until the gulf sysdrome caught up to me. I do electrical side jobs when I’m able. I just bought some solar cells and I’m going to make a panel or two. I’m excited to put it all togther. I l ooked into “Boots on the Roof” . It looks like an awsome program. But I just can’t afford it. Are there any grants that you are aware of ? I would very much appreciate any assitance you could offer, Sinceley Don Taylor.
