San Mateo County trains youth for Green Jobs

July 27, 2009

Welcome back, dedicated reader! Thanks for visiting.

San Mateo County recently applied nearly a million dollars in grant funds into teaching 150 youths to do green construction and learn other conservation business skills. These young adults, whose training is paid by the local stimulus package, hopefully will begin to do the hard work of aiding the county in the green revolution. One of the simple yet absolutely necessary types of jobs they will learn is an energy audit, where they take a look at all the resources used by houses or businesses and find ways to lessen the wasteful nature of appliances and the basic utilities of the home or building. In many ways the homeowner or business owner can use this information the aid in the transition to using less energy and adding renewable energy sources.  Utilities like PG&E are looking for qualified “green” employees such as these 150 young adults. And it’s more jobs like this that will trend and drive the boost to our economy in the years to come.

Unfortunately, these youth classes funded by stimulus money DON’T include solar energy training! After an audit and an already largely do it yourself attitude for energy usage reduction, solar PV or solar thermal would be the icing on a building that reduced its consumption. Hopefully, stimulus packages such as this one in San Mateo County will be on the rise and continue to boost our ailing economy where it needs it, churning out energy auditors with an addition of knowledge in the growing frontier in solar and renewable energy. And what is the key to boosting our economy? It’s simple really. Training and retraining will outfit our current workers with skill sets for tomorrow. Solar training lets you get a green job and help once again make America a better place. So why don’t you do as these young adults have already done, and join the green revolution.
