Smart grid testing in Pacific Northwest

December 3, 2009

Welcome back, dedicated reader! Thanks for visiting.

There has been lots of talk about smart grid “this”, and smart grid “that”, but the real question is what is it and when will we have them. smart grids are essentially power grids that utilize renewable energy sources of electricity like solar and wind power, but few large assemblages of green power plants have been made to test how best to design a smart grid. Thanks in part to federal stimulus money; various companies are teaming up to try out a smart grid in the Pacific Northwest.

This test will provide the type of situation where new smart grid technologies can be tested and so we all can get a better idea of how to actually make one of the many proposed smart grid systems. Technologies such as the energy storage, metering, and distribution will hopefully be put up to a good test and help drive the progress of smart grid systems for other sola projects around the world, such as the very large one Europe is planning in  of course Europe and parts of northern Africa.

And of course the Pacific Northwest is known for lots of wind, so wind power can take a large role in the smart grids source power. Adding to the benefits of this project is roughly 1,500 jobs it will provide to the many states its taking place in. And first results of the project should be coming in late 2010-early 2011.

  2. Grid Tied Wind Power is the key to Powering Our World Wind power is obviously a growing area of renewable energy, but for all its benefits and implications wind power still is a little unwieldy. As wind power changes with often unstable wind patterns, the power produced also carries this degree of instability and fluctuation. Larger grid systems, that link...
