Solar Industry an excellent boost to our economy

April 20, 2010

Welcome back, dedicated reader! Thanks for visiting.

America has been under a moderate depression in recent years, but despite this the solar industry is not only growing, it is growing quite rapidly. From 2008 to 2009 the solar industry added 17,000 new jobs across America and residential installations rose from 58 MW to 156MW. Part of this success is accredited to the removal of the $2,000 cap on the 30% income tax credit. About half of the new jobs out there are in solar installations, where businesses and employers are hiring tons of new workers to install solar panels on homes and businesses across the nation. These are full time jobs, with full benefits too. And its not only installations, but manufacturing jobs that are coming back to America, manufacturers like SunPower are in the process of adding manufacturing plants right here in the US. Of course bringing back manufacturing jobs would further boost the US economy, and drive the pace of solar here as well.

Unfortunately overall solar growth in the US is nowhere near California’s lead, and overall growth is still hindered by differences in funding and other incentives that vary from state to state. But progress is being made, and with growth comes precedence that will ingrain solar into our daily lives. With all this growth in solar businesses, the vast majority of which coming from previously construction only companies, now is a great time to add solar installer to your resume, and land yourself a great solar career.
