Massachusetts Community College Unveils New Green Training Center

November 9, 2010

Massachusetts is once again in the green news.

Folks in Southern Massachusetts looking to make their next job a green job now have a new training facility to help them achieve their goal.

Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA has unveiled its new Green Center renewable energy training facility yesterday, specializing in careers in solar power, energy auditing, and home weatherization.

Monday’s open house drew noteworthy community members, including business leaders and local elected officials. Housed in the former Quaker Fabric building the Green Center facility is designed to educate students a realistic setting. The center includes “replicas of different parts of a home, including exterior siding, an interior wall and a cross-section of an attic.”

Said Joe Reilly, Fall River business owner of Retrofit Insulation and a Green Center instructor, “All the props cover 90 percent of what you would run into out in the field.”

It’s no secret that the green industry continues to be lauded as a growing area for jobs in this forlorn economy. The Green Center hopes to endow its students with skills necessary to succeed in this growing industry.

“It’s a growing field, and jobs are available in the field,” said John J. Sbrega, BCC’s president. “There are technicians in weatherization that we need to train and have them available in our society. We are going to need them more and more as we become more conscious of the importance of sustainability.”

The Green Center is partnering with UMass Dartmouth’s Office of Campus and Community Sustainability and with YouthBuild in Fall River and New Bedford.

According to Julia Gold, the Green Center’s director, “The goal is really to have everyone working together collaborating, talking about how we have different resources and how we can leverage those resources.”

Reiterating the importance of decreasing our nation’s dependency on fossil fuels, while helping job-seekers enter a new and growing industry, New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang said “These are very important because there is an inexhaustible supply of work if we are serious about getting off the oil economy,” Lang said.
