If you happen to find yourself in Carthage, Mississippi on October 2, well consider yourself having been stroked with good luck.
On October 2, 2010 the “Down on the Farm Solar Tour,” part of the 2010 American Solar Energy Society (ASES) National Solar Tour, will take place from 9AM – 4PM at Spencer Pope Farms, where participants will be able to view an actual solar-operated farm.
The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) National Solar Tour is, as the name suggests, a national tour which offers solar- spellbound citizens the opportunity to visit and tour various solar-powered homes and businesses across the country. Last year, a reported 150,000 people across 49 U.S. states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico took part in the 2009 ASES. Part of the non-profit American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour, the tour is the world’s largest grassroots solar event.
The Hegman’s, who own and operate Mississippi Solar, transformed Spencer Pope Farms from a traditional chicken farm, to a 21st century 8.4 kW generating solar-powered wonder.
“Poultry farming is an energy-intensive business,” said Mississippi Solar co-founder Will Hegman. “Enormous tunnel fans are required to ventilate chicken houses. Lighting adds to the cost. There are close to 8,000 poultry farms in the State of Mississippi. If we were able to solarize all those businesses, we could offset around ten percent of the entire state’s energy needs,” he said
Use of solar power can also generate up to 30% in federal tax credits for farmers, while saving money on electricity.
“Solar can really change the life of a poultry farmer, who has astronomical electric bills, particularly in hot Mississippi summers,” says Mississippi Co-owner, Carolyn Hegman. “This technology has the potential to benefit everyone. Solar energy can cut costs for home owners, farmers, boat houses, horse barns — and now chicken houses.”
In speaking with various green-energy resources, ASES National Solar Tour Manager, Richard Burns stated, “The appetite for solar in America’s southeast is growing, and Mississippi Solar’s Will and Carolyn Hegman are serving up some mouth-watering, cost-effective ideas to feed that hunger during their “Down on the Farm Solar Tour. Interest in the solar industry is cooking, and consumers across the nation are eager to sample its wares, which bring enticing tax credits, cash rebates, improved property values and cleaner communities to home and business owners across America.”
Do they make solar-powered fryers, because the good folks at KFC just might want to consider it.
